Finely colored pair of images of the Piazza San Marco, one of which depicts the Fire which destroyed the Great Council Hall in 1577. At left is the Piazza San Marco with the Basilica and the Campanile. In the foreground are Venetian nobles and a pair of fighting cats in the square. At right is the Great Council Hall and Doge's Palace during the fire of 1577. The fire destroyed the Scrutinio Room and the Great Council Chamber The Great Council Hall was destroyed in the fire of December 20, 1577, in which the Doge's Palace suffered so much damage that it was nearly destroyed. In the end, it was decided to restore the building, and during this time, until September 30, 1578, the Great Council met in a storage shed in the Arsenal of Venice.
